Making Mosquito Observations

Perhaps you've already asked yourself, "Isn't it dangerous to study mosquitoes? What if they bite me and make me sick?"

You should know that if you decide to participate, you will be working solely with harmless mosquito larvae. Please be aware that adult female mosquitoes are potential vectors of disease. Protect yourself from the risk of mosquito bites by wearing light-colored clothing that covers exposed skin. For skin that cannot be covered, apply bug spray. During the larvae sampling procedure, there is the possibility of being exposed to contaminated, stagnant water. Use caution to avoid accidentally splashing the water into your face. Wear gloves and safety goggles.
