NASA GLOBE Observer’s Weekly Roundup: 4-10 Nov. 2018

Mosquito larvae in water.

Science days, mosquitoes and more.

1. ISCSMD: This coming Saturday (November 10th) is International Science Center and Science Museum Day. About the day:

"The International Science Center and Science Museum Day (ISCSMD) is a yearly, global event illustrating the impact and reach of all the world’s science centers and science museums. It demonstrates the role these institutions play with their millions of visitors in raising awareness of—and engagement in—sustainable development and the solutions to worldwide challenges such as climate change, human health (HIV/AIDS, Zika, clean water, etc.), energy, waste, water shortages, gender, oceans, and other global issues."

2. WORLD SCIENCE DAY: November 10th is also World Science Day. Why not celebrate these days by making mosquito habitat observations with the GLOBE Observer app. You will learn more about the scientific process and mosquito anatomy if you do the identification portion of the observation. But you could also simply help eliminate breeding sites.  At least in California during recent weeks we have seen a rise in Aedes aegyptai mosquitoes. Aedes aegyptai mosquitoes can transmit zika. This is not good. If we all make a concerted effort to dump out standing water and remove trash that could collect water we could all make a difference.

3. STEM: This Thursday is National STEM Day.  STEM stands for Science, Technology Engineering, and Math. You could share your contributions as a citizen scientist on social media this Thursday.  Just hashtag them #NationalSTEMDay.

4. CARL SAGAN: This Friday marks the 84th anniversary of the birth of astronomer and science communicator Carl Sagan.  My favorite quote from him as is follows:

“Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every 'superstar,' every 'supreme leader,' every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."

5. WEEKLY VIDEO: This week check out our favorite cloud images from all around the world. You will notice a few with fall foliage.
