NASA GLOBE Observer’s Weekly Roundup: 25 February- 3 March 2018

Here at NASA GLOBE Observer we are gearing up to kick off a month-long clouds data challenge.  Learn more about clouds, the challenge and more in this week’s edition of the roundup.

1. IMAGE OF THE WEEK: Have you ever seen a rainbow like the one in the above image? I have, but only once or twice during my lifetime.  What you are seeing in the above is called "cloud iridescence."

"Cloud iridescence is relatively rare. The cloud must be thin and have lots of water droplets or ice crystals of about the same size. When that happens, the suns rays encounter just a few droplets at at time. For this reason, semi-transparent clouds or clouds that are just forming are the ones most likely to have iridescence." 2. CHALLENGE: Want to participate in a citizen science competition? We have a clouds challenge starting up in March. (Dates are March 15th through April 15th.)  Learn more in the link below, but the observer who submits the most observations during the period will receive a video shout out from a NASA scientist.

3. DATA COLLECTION: Speaking of data collection and clouds ... meet teacher Jeff Bouwman.  Bouwman teaches both the 6th and 7th grade at Shumate Middle School. Plus, this teacher was also one of our top 10 GLOBE cloud observers for 2017. He definitely has his "head in the clouds."

4. INTERESTING TYPES: You can check out some more cool cloud images and be inspired to seek out interesting cloud types when participating in our upcoming challenge by checking out the link below.

5. WEEKLY VIDEO: Here are our favorite cloud observation submissions from the past week from all around the world.
