Mosquito Monday Challenge Update - 26 July 2021

The GLOBE Mosquito Habitat Photo Challenge kicked off on July 25 and runs through August 25! Check out our Data Dashboard new window on the Challenge Website throughout the challenge to see the latest numbers and trends. Let us know how you're doing throughout the challenge by tagging us on social - #MosquitoChallenge - with your photos, tips, and questions!

One is the loneliest number

Yes, the challenge name specifically asks for mosquito habitat photos, but we need photos of larvae, their water habitats, and the broader land cover. That means taking "coincident" observations (same place and time) using two GLOBE Observer tools: Mosquito Habitat Mapper and Land Cover. Read more about why both are needed.

Tip of the Week: Ready for my close-up

Mosquito larvae are small - 1/8 to 1/4 inch (.3-.6 cm), with only the very largest species growing to ~1/2" (1.3 cm). Check out our photo tips for taking great mosquito larvae photographs using a clip on magnifier with your smart phone. There are several brands of clip-on magnifiers available online for less than $10 U.S. Look for one that magnifies at least 60x-100x.

Ask Me Anything

On July 23, the science leads for the GLOBE Observer Mosquito Habitat Mapper (Dr. Rusty Low, IGES) and Land Cover (Peder Nelson, OSU) joined NASA citizen science project leads for a Reddit AMA. While the live event is over, you can read the burning questions and answers.  new window
