Making Mosquito Observations

A mosquito habitat observation with the GLOBE Observer app has up to four steps (the first is required, the rest are optional depending on equipment and situation). The app has detailed instructions to walk you through each step.

  1. Identify and photograph potential mosquito habitats, i.e. sources of standing water
  2. Sample and count mosquito larvae (requires a scoop or container to take a sample)
  3. Identify larva type (requires magnification from a microscope or macrolens attachment)
  4. Eliminate the habitat, if possible

Additional resources to learn more about mosquitos and how to make observations can be found below.

If you are interested in exploring more of the 50+ data collection protocols offered by the full GLOBE Program, check out the e-training page. You will need to complete an introductory module, plus a specific sphere introduction (Hydrosphere is where you will find mosquitoes) and at least one protocol-specific module. Each module consists of a PowerPoint presentation to review, plus an assessment test (you will need to be logged in to your GLOBE Observer account to take the test.) Further questions? Contact us.
